Hi Hippies,
Just stopping by to say I passed the 8 year mark a few weeks back.
I couldn't have HR due to previous problems as a teenager ( slipped femoral epiphysis) This was pinned but I was left with a slight twist on the femoral head which meant THR.
I went to Birmingham to see Ronan Treacy who assured me he would do his utmost to resurface, had the HR kit ready in the Operating Theatre but it wasn't possible.
It took a while to come to terms with but after some great support on here I soon realised that it was my only option and so I'm so grateful to be totally pain free, back on a motorcycle, back playing football, playing with Grandchildren etc.
So to anyone who's not a candidate for resurfacing- don't despair. Large ball, ceramic THR is a great second choice.
I don't want to think where I'd be without it.
I'll need my other side doing in a few years I think and  as I had less trauma on that side as a teen, I may be ok for HR but I can honestly say that if it doesn't work out and its another THR- bring it on.
Hope you're all wall and enjoying life, Cheers, Mike.

Mike   Congratulations on your 8 year anniversary. Thank You so much for letting us know how you are doing. It is important that people understand a hip resurfacing is not always right for you, but a THR can also get you active and out of pain again. I think we sometimes forget that until it happens to someone.  Again, Thanks for stopping by and I wish you the vert best. I look forward to your future anniversaries.

Hi Pat and all Hippies, its been a long time since I've posted on surfacehippy so well overdue a quick update.
It's great reading about people's recoveries and how resurfacing is still changing people's lives.
I'm coming up to 14 years with my THR and it feels as good as the day I got it in 2012.
I had a scare 3 years ago when I thought it had dislocated.
I spent 3 weeks in a full leg brace and went back to see Ronan Treacy in Birmingham- his x-rays showed the hip was as good as the day he did it with excellent bone growth around the stem.
He diagnosed a soft tissue injury and with rest and a good physiotherapy programme, I'm totally back to normal.
Still playing walking football, motorcycling etc.
So life with the THR is good.
I hope anyone reading this who, like me, was not a candidate for HR can take consolation and not be too disappointed.
Of course, HR is the way to go but THR is still a great option if its not to be.
Thanks to all the people on here that helped me with such good advice and to you Pat for helping so many of us.

Hi Mike D

Great to hear you are doing well.  It is most important to be out of pain and active, no matter the hip device.  I know most want a hip resurfacing, but as you have shown, it is not always possible.  Your update gives folks with revisions and only THR candidates hope.

Thanks again for sharing.  I know people really appreciate personal stories.

I wish you the best.
