Hip Resurfacing Devices / ReCerf Receives its CE Mark, A...
Last post by Pat Walter - July 05, 2025, 11:54:48 AM
July 3, 2025 - MatOrtho® is proud to announce that the ReCerf® Hip Resurfacing Arthroplasty (HRA) has received its CE mark, confirming compliance with European safety and performance standards. This important milestone expands access to hip resurfacing, enabling wider availability across the UK, Europe and internationally where CE marking supports market access.
ReCerf is the world's first commercially available ceramic HRA, first approved by Australia's Therapeutic Goods Administration in November 2024. Since its initial use in 2018, over 1,600 patients have received the device. Patient-reported outcomes are highly positive, and the revision rate remains very low up to six years.

Dr. Gross / Re: Doctor Gross info and tips...
Last post by MarvinB - July 05, 2025, 10:15:37 AM
Great info, OBX!  I read and reread your tips before and after BOTH of my surgeries and found them VERY helpful.

Update for 2025:

Dr. Gross has moved from Irmo, SC to an office directly across from Richland Memorial/Medical University of South Carolina.

After hip resurfacing is performed either there or at the Midland Orthopaedics and Neurosurgery Surgical Center downtown, if you live within driving distance of Columbia, SC, you can chose to stay at the Residence Inn across from the hospital.

A home health nurse will visit you at the hotel the evening after your surgery to check vitals and assess pain level.

Dr. Gross will visit the following morning to check on you, answer any questions and release you to go home.  He's a great guy!  My wife and I had breakfast, checked out early, and she drove me home.  No hospital stay!

The staff at Midlands is fantastic!

Home tips to add:
A king-size pillow to keep between the legs for sleeping, not too heavily stuffed.  You want to keep from crossing your legs for the first six weeks.
The Polar Cube ice machine was AWESOME!  We went through several bags of ice from the convenience store and used the "fast ice" feature on our fridge.  Almost burned it up making ice!  Wonderful for keeping any swelling down and just plain feels GOOD.
A raised toilet seat.  Tried going without it for the right hip, since we had 18" high seats.  Bought it for the left hip surgery and did not regret.
I installed some grab bars in our bathrooms since my wife and I had elderly parents and family visiting.  Came in quite handy and helps resale value of the house!  :)
As OBX stated:  slow and steady wins the race.  It's a marathon, not a sprint.  Follow PT guidance to the letter and your recovery will be successful.  Plenty of time for rock climbing, black diamond skiing, and sliding soccer tackles after a year of good recovery.

BEST OF LUCK on your recovery!

Polymotion® IDE Study Reaches 30% Enrollment Milestone
June 23, 2025

23 Jun 2025
Momentum Builds as Polymotion® Hip Resurfacing IDE Study Reaches 30% Enrolment and Expands to Nine Active Sites in the US.
We are pleased to announce that the Polymotion® Hip Resurfacing (PHR®) IDE study has now reached 30% of its target enrolment. This reflects the strong momentum behind the study and mission to bring this next-generation hip resurfacing technology to patients in the United States.

In line with this momentum, we've also activated two new clinical sites, expanding access and accelerating recruitment:

  • Dr. Thomas Huff – Oregon Health & Science University (Portland, OR)
  • Dr. David Crawford – Joint Implant Surgeons (New Albany, OH)

These additions bring the total number of active sites in the study to nine, reflecting growing enthusiasm from both surgeons and patients for the Polymotion® system.
The Polymotion® Hip Resurfacing System is an investigational device designed for active patients seeking bone-conserving alternatives to traditional hip replacement. Unlike contemporary metal-on-metal technologies, the Polymotion® system combines a Vitamin E-infused polyethylene cup with a titanium-coated shell and a metal femoral cap — avoiding metal-on-metal articulation while maintaining excellent range of motion and implant stability.

The IDE study is currently active at the following clinical sites:

  • Mr. Ronan Treacy and Dr. Will Peckett – King Edward VII (Bermuda)
  • Dr. Thomas Gross and Dr. Coleman Fowble – Midlands Orthopaedics & Neurosurgery (Columbia, SC)
  • Dr. Stephen Raterman – Florida Medical Clinic Orlando Health (Tampa, FL)
  • Dr. William Macaulay, Dr. Scott Marwin, and Dr. Matthew Hepinstall – NYU Langone (New York, NY)
  • Dr. Craig Della Valle – Rush University Medical Center (Chicago, IL)
  • Dr. Michael Mont and Dr. Ronald Delanois – Sinai Hospital (Baltimore, MD)
  • Dr. Anthony Carter – Hampton Roads Orthopaedics (Newport News, VA)
  • Dr. Thomas Huff – Oregon Health & Science University (Portland, OR)
  • Dr. David Crawford – Joint Implant Surgeons (New Albany, OH)

We're grateful to our investigators and clinical partners for their dedication and enthusiasm as we continue building progress towards full enrolment.

This reflects both the clinical interest in metal-free resurfacing options and the potential benefit the Polymotion® may have for younger, active patients, particularly women and smaller sized patients, who have been underrepresented in hip resurfacing due to metal-on-metal concerns.

JointMedica' s Chief Commercial Officer Tim Band stated "Reaching 30% enrolment in the PHR® IDE study is a strong validation of both the clinical need and the enthusiasm surrounding the Polymotion® system. We are proud to see growing adoption among top orthopaedic centres and continued interest from patients who seek bone-preserving solutions without the risks associated with metal-on-metal implants. Thank you to all surgeons and patients who are participating in the study."

We look forward to continued progress and will provide further updates as the study advances.

Dr. Gross is looking for candidates within 200 miles of Columbia, South Carolina, for the Polymotion Hip Resurfacing trials that he is participating in. He’s recently been getting a lot of patient from further a field which is great, but not suitable for the required follow ups. If you or a friend need a hip replacement you can send him an email:

Hip Resurfacing Devices / BHR with Pritchett
Last post by misternewt - June 14, 2025, 09:21:06 PM
A lot of people seek out Dr Pritchett because of the specific device he implants and their desire to avoid metal implants.  Has anyone chosen to go with Dr Pritchett and requested a Birmingham device?

Thanks
