Sorry, Hip Talk and Website were hacked again.  I worked days trying to get everything back up and running.  Meanwhile, I have changed hosting.  Godaddy was bad and not helpful.  Always just wanted more money.  The new hosting is very simple for now.  I think something happened at the Godaddy shared server.  But who knows.  I have tried to simplify things more and am still working to get everything back where it belongs.

I am sorry, but I guess it is the world of IT and hosting.

I am so happy to have everything back up and running.

Now - back to sharing hip resurfacing stories and information.

Bilateral Hip Resurfacing Stories / Bilat. Mr Holland - RBHR - Mar...
Last post by morph - March 31, 2026, 06:17:32 AM
Well it is close to 14 years after I got my left hip resurfaced, it has been and still is really good and still feeling great, it looks exactly the same on the X ray now as it did back then. I have put it through a fair bit of abuse over the years and has been utterly fantastic and long may it continue. This site back then helped me in so many ways it was and still is really invaluable in so many ways.

Now my right hip has finally also been done by Mr Holland. I am 6 days post op and memories of the recovery is coming flooding back to me. I was diagnosed with bilateral osteoarthritis all those years ago so knew this was coming. Personally I reckoned I had 5 years but as is often the case it gradually gets worse over time and questions start to arise when is the right time. I always said that I would not let it go as far and have to endure as much pain as I did last time. But nevertheless without a certain amount of pain it is still a tricky call to make and it was holding up well. Anyway, the decision was made easier when a little over a year ago there was a step change in pain and discomfort. I had difficulty putting on shoes and socks and a gradual worsening limp. The saying 'you know when the time is right' holds true.

So I have now had the surgery, which is all reminiscent of last time which was covered in my Story post at the time back in 8th June 2012. Things are going great so far, just taking it slow and steady and trying to fill my time in with useful things.

Hip Resurfacing Has a New Life — What This Means for You

3/23/2026  By Thomas P. Gross, MD –  Hip Resurfacing Surgeon

Hip resurfacing in the United States is entering an exciting new chapter. Beginning in June 2026, the Recap/Magnum resurfacing implant—made to the same specifications previously used by Zimmer Biomet—will once again be available. It took more than a year and a half to purchase the design rights, but manufacturing has now restarted, and implants should arrive in Columbia, SC early this summer.

This comes at the perfect time, as the Birmingham Hip Resurfacing (BHR) implant made by Smith & Nephew is being phased out. Once our center, Midlands Orthopaedics, has several months of supply, these new Recap/Magnum implants and updated instruments will become available to other surgeons across the U.S. Our goal is simple:

We want to keep hip resurfacing available to patients everywhere—not just at our center.

I do not receive royalties for this implant.

Hip Resurfacing Devices / No Small Devices in USA
Last post by cmc - March 26, 2026, 04:39:02 PM
Eight years ago, I had my left hip resurfaced and it's been a terrific success. Now my right hip has become problematic, so I went to see if I could have it resurfaced.

Ugh. Just got back from seeing Dr. Brooks (who is awesome) and found out the smaller size devices are no longer being made! At least not the ones FDA-approved in the US. So my only options are to find a clinical trial or go abroad. Or have a total hip replacement. So sad.

I never saw such a list of restrictions for people with hip resurfacing.  That is why people choose hip resurfacing - no restrictions after recovery.  Most surgeons let you do what you want at 6 months and many don't want high impact sports like running until one year.  There are many athletes that return to their sports - even professionals like hockey players, tennis, weight lifting, marathon running, etc.  Not sure what you are reading or what surgeon you are talking with, but I would suggest talking and using the very experienced ones who don't restrict your activities after recovery.  Here are athletes stories  https://surfacehippy.info/category/hip-resurfacing-stories/athletes-hip-resurfacing-stories/   and list of the very experienced surgeons   https://surfacehippy.info/hip-resurfacing-doctors-over-1000-hip-resurfacing-surgeries   A couple stories   https://surfacehippy.info/jannes-vercaemst-bilateral-hip-resurfacing-patient-iska-world-champion-2024    https://surfacehippy.info/barts-bilateral-hip-resurfacing-with-dr-de-smet  https://surfacehippy.info/matt-daveys-bilateral-ceramic-on-ceramic-hip-resurfacing-by-prof-piers-yates   I wish you the best.  Pat

It has been 20 years since I received my left hip BHR from Dr. De Smet.  Back in 2005, I really needed a hip replacement, but just didn't want a THR since I was 61 and very active.  A man I was talking to from our little town told me how he went to California to Dr. Amstutz for a hip resurfacing.  So I started researching Hip Resurfacing.  Wow, am I glad I did.  After talking with others on Discussion Groups, I decided on Dr. De Smet.  He even emailed me several times about my hip and information about hip resurfacing.  He had done around 2000 back then.  I am so glad I chose Hip Resurfacing and Dr. De Smet.  I flew from Ohio to Belgium and stayed 10 days.  It was a wonderful trip and Ghent was beautiful.  I never regretted my decision and my BHR still works great today.  Never had a problem.  Unfortunately, the rest of my 81 year old body has many problems!  I decided back then that there needed to be a website about hip resurfacing so I started the https://surfacehippy.info website. I am glad I did because millions of people have looked at the website and many found it useful.  Close to a million visitors a year visit the website.  I have hundreds of emails from people Thanking me for starting/running the website and how it changed their lives.  I hope to keep it running for many more years.  I wrote a book about my BHR experience and it is a free download  https://surfacehippy.info/ebook/belgium%26mybhr-2018.pdf   Hoping to enjoy my BHR for a few more years!  Patricia Walter
