Psoas problems help!

Hi to you all from England!. I'm a 50 year old male, a keen runner for many years
until arthritis in one hip struck a few years back. I did a lot of
research into what could be done, and I was very fortunate to have my
hip resurfaced at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital in Birmingham.
The outlook was good, I had read about many who have had the
opreation returning to running, the consultant also gave the OK after
3 months. I was mobile almost immediately after the operation, and
very soon was cycling and working out at the gym.
However 18 months down the line I am hardly running at all due to an
annoying side effect. When I start to run all is fine, but after a few
minutes a gradual soreness develops in the groin area, and increases
until I have to stop after about 10 minutes.
I spoke to the hospital about this and was told that with a hip
resurface, the device fitted (BHR) is slightly bigger that the part it
replaces, and can in some cases impinge upon the psoas muscle.
This is what I'm told is happening to me, it gradually gets inflamed
the longer I run.
Has anyone here suffered this problem? I've tried prolonged
stretching but to no avail. I feel like I've been through so much to
get back to running, only to fall at the last hurdle.
However I think the hip resurfacing operation itself  is absolutely
brilliant, and can give one a new lease of life.
If anyone here can advise on the psoas problem, it would be much
appreciated. Sorry for this rambling post!

http://www.surfacehippy.info/groinpain.php]Hi Richard
Welcome to Hip Talk.

I have read about a few people with similar psoas problems.  I have not had that problem, so can't talk from personal experience.

I have a page with some articles about similar problems  [url]http://www.surfacehippy.info/groinpain.php

Our group here is still small with only 400+ members, so I dont know if you will find anyone with the same problem.  I would suggest that you also join the Yahoo Surface Hippy Group of over 7000 members  http://groups.yahoo.com/group/surfacehippy/
There have been people with similar problems there.

I also know many people have bursitis in their operated hip.  I have the same type of problem in my unoperated hip.  I am fine doing repetitve motion for awhile, then it really starts to hurt.  I had a cortisone shot to help it.  I do know others have had the same problem in their operated hip.

I am sure you have read the many stories I have posted about people back to running without problems, but sometimes people do have problems.  I am happy that you hip resurfacing is working well for you as long as you are not running.

If you find a solution, good exercise or stretch, I hope you will share it with us.

Good Luck.

Hi Richard,
I was surfing around to see if anyone was having psoas pain and I found your post.  I know it is 120 days old, so I was wondering if you were still having the groin, psoas pain?  I had my left hip resurfaced in Jan o7 and my right hip March 08.  After my left surgery I went back to running and my left hip felt great.  However , the right started to scream and needed the same surgery.  Long story short, I am  5 months post op and swimming, biking and running.  My right hip feels GREAT but the left is having the same problem that you described.  Did you get rid of the pain? I am also just 50, and very, very active.
